Retirement plan distributions
401(k) checks, pension payments, IRAs — how they become unclaimed and how to find them.
Retirement plans sometimes issue checks that are never cashed — for example, a small balance paid out after someone leaves a job, or a required distribution mailed to an outdated address. NAUPA operates a States Unclaimed Retirement Clearinghouse (statesurch.org) for plans reporting uncashed retirement distribution checks.
Also check federal sources
Some retirement money is not held by states at all. Pensions from plans that were terminated or taken over may be with the federal Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC). These are separate searches from the state programs. See federal sources.
