Refunds, credit balances and overpayments

Retail refunds, medical overpayments, rebates — how they become unclaimed and how to find them.

Businesses hold small amounts owed to customers all the time: a refund issued after you returned an item, a credit balance after overpaying a medical bill, an insurance reimbursement, a rebate check. When the business cannot pay it out, it is reported to the state.

These amounts are often small, but they add up — and they are the kind most likely to be found under an old address. Rules about gift cards and gift certificates vary widely between states; many states exclude some or all of them.
