Unclaimed property for businesses and nonprofits

Organizations lose track of money just like people: vendor refunds, deposits, overpayments and checks mailed to an old address. States regularly return money to companies, nonprofits, churches, schools and cities.

How to search

Who can claim

Usually an officer or authorized representative, with proof of authority (for example a resolution or letter on letterhead) and proof of the organization's link to the address on file. Dissolved businesses are often claimed by former owners or shareholders with documentation.

If your business holds unclaimed property

That's the other side: reporting. Businesses must report and send dormant customer and employee balances to the state each year. Rules vary by state and property type. NAUPA keeps a state-by-state reporting guide. This site focuses on owners claiming property, not holder compliance.
